We've finally written a beginner quilt pattern! I mean, we have others that I'd call Confident Beginner or Advanced Beginner, but this one would be the perfect first quilt. Meet Mary's Patchwork. With only one size, foundational techniques, and illustrated instructions, this pattern is what we're calling 'New Beginner'.
New Beginner Quilt Pattern
We've included things we wouldn't typically explain in a pattern, for example, how to properly attach borders. We want this pattern to be accessible to the first-time quilter, so we've included a few extra details while being sure not to add so much that it overwhelms.
We also chose to limit this to just one size as multiple sizes can add a lot of extra details and therefore confusion that a first-time quilter does not need.
What's in A Name?
Last year, we released a pattern called Laura's 4-Patch. If you are familiar with my story, then you'll know why we named that pattern Laura's 4-Patch. Spoiler: it was named after Laura Ingalls Wilder. Mary's Patchwork, likewise was named after Mary Ingalls. And it's fitting too, because Mary's Patchwork is an excellent first quilt (older sister), whereas Laura's 4-Patch is better as a second project (younger sister).
Just One Size
Mary's Patchwork includes one size: a generous lap at 50" x 55" (127cm x 139cm) It's a perfect size for beginners too. Not too big and not too small. But small enough that you'll be able to quilt it on your domestic machine.
2 Versions included in the Pattern
The pattern includes 2 pre-cut friendly options. A fat quarter version or a fat eighth version. Both options are great for stash busting (if you are not a beginner!).
The fat eighth version uses 18 fabrics. This will make the quilt look a lot more 'scrappy'.
The fat quarter version uses 9. You could grab a fat quarter bundle for this one.
Is Mary's Patchwork right for you?
Are you new to quilting? Overwhelmed with big, complicated patterns? Looking for something straightforward that'll help you learn the basics? Then yes, this pattern is for you!
Are you a quilter with some (or lots) of experience looking for an easy weekend project? Then this pattern would be a great option!
This quilt is not for you if you're looking for a challenge or want lots of size options. I'd recommend Gertrude's Star if this is what you are looking for!
